It’s the Modern World, the End of Times, the Decline of the West, the Revolt of the Masses. It’s the 1920’s. It’s going to be Very Silly.

Comedian Harmonists

The Comedian Harmonists were the greatest German “boy band” of the late 1920’s-early 1930’s. Unfortunately, when Hitler came to power, they were forced to split up, because many of the members were Jewish and weren’t allowed to work in Germany anymore. This is yet another aspect of the destruction that the Nazis wrought on Germany’s cultural life. Not only were numerous creative people harassed, expelled and murdered - the creative networks that Jewish and non-Jewish artists had maintained together were destroyed.
For modern ears, the Comedian Harmonists probably sound corny. That was the point - light entertainment for the masses, easy to listen to, easy to digest. But many of the songs became classics and are even today quoted and referenced to in German culture. I wouldn’t be surprised if the pop group Die Prinzen have been inspired by these comical a cappella singers. Here are some fun songs that you can download. What’s even more fun, I made some DRAWINGS featuring my favourite characters inspired by some of their songs.
