Though he should perhaps have used the speed he had when he came running. He could have just jumped up a few steps on the cliff, and swung himself over the wall. (If this was a kung fu comic, that is.)
I just read on the Arditi page that ju-jutsu was a part of their training already in 1917. Maybe the Alpini specialised in kung-fu (after all, they were sent to fight in the Boxer Rebellion in 1900…).
