I like drawing comics. I like seeing results. This page is not The Best Page Ever but it’s a step forward in the story. I like that kind of results. This page is also nice because I could draw the cutest little pope ever (Benedict XV).
I’m also secretly smug about the fact that tiny little details reveal hours of research. Other details are just accidents that I hope nobody will notice.

Whee! Such a nice phone … Is that a kind of textile covered wire? Was that the norm back then? I have a faint memory that we had an electric iron in the 70’s-80’s with that kind of wire which was extremely prone to getting tangled up …
I think you will have an occasion to write extensive appendixes with all the historical background info. I have to confess that I feel a bit ‘huh?’ sometimes when I know I’m perhaps supposed to know something about 1920’s Italy when reading Goldenbird, but in fact do not. ;_;

The phone design is based on some early 1910’s Ericsson models that I’ve seen on Spanish and Italian websites. Here’s a cute one. It doesn’t have a dial disc (that came later). It should have a bell somewhere, I don’t know where -_-;

Yeah, there are some problems with my secret research orgies. One big problem is that I like to parody obscure events and people (such as d’Annunzio), and nobody will get the joke unless they’re nerds about this period, and then they’re more likely to be offended because I’m not sticking to the facts.
That’s a useful lesson from “Even A Monkey Can Draw Manga” - if you’re going to use an obscure subject, keep it simple. (Maybe in another comic, though.)
