We Have Seen The Enemy And He Is Us

Dearest of Enemies
Since September 2003 (gasp!) I have been working on my Ph.D. dissertation in the glorious science of History (well, in my case maybe more of an art), dealing with enemy images, idealized stereotypes, identification, self-Othering and other difficult and confusing subjects that at least got my own brain turned inside out sometimes. The last 3 days before deadline were pure hell, I can assure you. But like Dante I’m through with the Inferno and just passing through Purgatory while the manuscript is mangled through the publishing system and D-Day is drawing nigh.
It’s 19/12, a Friday, if you’re interested. Invitations for the post-dissertation party will be sent out in due time. I can’t believe I just casually wrote that. There will be a party, yes there will.

Congratulations! What an amazing achievement, and such an interesting topic! I really wish I could see the work that you’ve done on this issue.
Best of luck!

Mum is already obsessing about what to wear at the party.
That graphic is so funny!

Thank you, Zheyna! I hope the book is decent, I had a very hazy picture of it when I delivered it to the publisher after 3 practically sleepless nights. I’m planning to make a little website dedicated to the thesis with some translations, pictures and stuff that got left out in the last minute.
Tinet: Yeah, poor Per Albin doesn’t look like himself at all! It’s from a caricature by Tove Jansson’s Mum Signe “Ham” Hammarsten-Jansson… It’s especially cool because she was a Sweden-born woman illustrating a Finland-born man’s extremely anti-Swedish satire … which was written in Swedish for a Swedish-speaking audience in Finland! And yet, I think most Finns can recognise the character as a “typical Swede” even without the national colours…

OK… This is the “Swedish people’s own” Per Albin Hansson whom we know and… well. At least people know he was the one with the eyebrows.
BUT… then I found this picture of a much younger PA.
Damn if he doesn’t look like Björn Gustafsson!
EDIT: Warning, extremely Swedish humour in the linked YouTube clip.
