It’s the Modern World, the End of Times, the Decline of the West, the Revolt of the Masses. It’s the 1920’s. It’s going to be Very Silly.

U.S. Presidential Elections

election day <

Topical! We're all holding our breath over here in Europe. I didn't intend to ask the Goldenbird gang whom they would vote for, because it seems pretty obvious. Mayann and Lou would have been campaigning for Obama ages ago. Perhaps his politics aren’t as liberal as they would like, but COME ON! Goldie has a soft spot for community organizers and no love lost for the dumbing down of the religious right. Falco would probably need to examine his conscience first. Of course, he is pro-life and pro-family and all that. And Obama isn’t that pro-immigration. Thank God Joe Biden is a Catholic…

And Andy … would vote for Gloria La Riva.

(I hear people asking about Mochi’s vote, but she is a staunch supporter of the Taishō-Tennō, who rules regardless whether people want it or not.)

The 1920 election was won by Warren G. Harding, who campaigned for a “return to normalcy” (a word of his own invention) and against “wibble and wobble” (your guess is as good as mine). Read more about the 1920 elections; about the “worst president ever”; about Eugene V. Debs (who got 3,4% of the vote, in spite of running the campaign from prison); about the Sacco & Vanzetti case; and an article about the causes of the stock market crash in 1929 and the Great Depression. Also see The New York times: “In Untruths About Obama, Echoes of a Distant Time” - I can only hope Mayann is right and people actually learn something from past mistakes…

I will be voting! I turned eighteen just barely in time for this historic election. And I’m with the Goldenbird crowd, no mistake.

Ah, the global culture. I’m ashamed that I live in a country whose presidential race is commented on worldwide, and I can only name a handful of foreign leaders. Damn Americans.

    thank you for this.

It’s nice to know that my vote Tuesday will be representing more than just this one American. I wish I could vote for Eugene Debs too but I will settle for voting for Mr. Obama.

Zheyna, that’s great! Perfect timing. The United States are simply too important for us to ignore. Most Europeans have a deep affection for America - not the politics (we have enough of that sort over here) - but for some kind of American dream… through all the immigrant and minority experiences that we share. I wish more people were conscious of these links.

Trochee, thanks for the visit! Just checked out your blog (nice Paul Krugman song). Eugene Debs is underrated. My favourite quote is perhaps this:
“I said then, and I say now, that while there is a lower class, I am in it, and while there is a criminal element I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free.”

That is so lofty, it is pure Buddhism. And I love it!

The New York Times front page is so sweet this morning.

    … Phew.

Excuse my feeble mind, but exactly why is Andy hugging
    Falco?

    Tinet:

Falco is protesting for Sacco and Vanzetti, two Italian-born American workers and Anarchists who were tried, convicted and executed for armed robbery and murder of two pay-clerks in 1920. They were most likely framed, and definitely treated very unfairly simply for being Anarchists.
Falco is probably motivated by Italian patriotism, while Andy is a labour activist, and so, they are united in a common cause …

Regarding Falco’s activism, here’s another important link: http://www.speakers-corner.it/rizzoli/stella/home.htm

It’s a website raising awareness about racism and xenophobia in Italy by showing how Italians themselves have been poor immigrants and targets of discrimination around the world. I would like to see similar campaigns in Sweden and Finland. Siamo tutti emigranti!

Ohh! Thanks for clarifying; now it makes a lot of sense (to me)…and good luck with the continuation of the regular comic!
